NED 30 meter and 3 arc-second

New  Terrain Databases Increase Accuracy

In an effort to improve the existing USGS 30 arc-second terrain elevation database V-Soft Communications has derived a new 30 meter and 3 arc-second data set from the USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED) 30 meter data. These new databases are unparalleled in their accuracy.

The quote from the USGS, below, explains the derivation of the new terrain database.

"The USGS National Elevation Dataset has been developed by merging the highest-resolution, best-quality elevation data available across the United States into a seamless raster format. NED is the result of the maturation of the USGS effort to provide 1:24,000-scale Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data for the conterminous US and 1:63,360-scale DEM data for Alaska.

A "must see" is the comparison between the current 3 arc-second data and the new NED 3 arc-second data in a terrain study done in Probe 3. Note the sharpness of the terrain shading and the clarity of the terrain as it matches the street level images.

30 Meter Terrain with High Resolution

V-Soft Communications has compiled the USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED) 30-meter database for use with Probe 3, Terrain-3D and PlotPath and other V-Soft programs. The new, satellite corrected, terrain database includes the continental United States as well as Hawaii and Puerto Rico.  Below are four terrain profiles (done in Probe 3) showing the differences between our NGDC 30 arc-second terrain, our USGS 3 arc-second terrain, our NED 3-arc second, and our new NED 30 meter database. The 30 meter dataset is a natural for doing critical microwave path analysis and for doing important Longley-Rice coverage analysis.

The new 30 meter NED terrain database is now available for purchase. The cost for the full database is $3,250. However, the database may be purchased as a north dataset and/or a south dataset. The cost for each of these datasets is $1,750. If you are interested in purchasing any of our most accurate terrain databases to date, please contact Lisa Erickson at info@v-soft.com.
